Lost at Sea

MAN AT SEA FOR 5 DAYS

On Monday September 17th 2007, 5 people set sail from Grand Cay, Abaco on a 55’ Defender Fishing Vessel named the “Mary D” headed for Freeport (Dover sound). Tuesday morning when the Boat didn't reach- BASRA was notified, with out any proper information on the vessel BASRA was forced to do a search on information of the vessel. After a few hours of calling around to get information about the type vessel and last location to know what we were looking for an air search was carried out the third day. Capt John and Sue Roberts went up and searched the Sales cay area where the boat was told to be, after a thorough search turned up empty; He then prepared to fly west where he spotted the boat with a few men on board waving wildly for assistance. A position was given and Rescue 3 (any boat going out under BASRA not a Basra boat) was launched with Jamie Rose as Captain. After launching from Queens’s cove to the position the boat was in actuality found approx. 9 miles from where the plane had spotted them originally. They decided to pull anchor and follow the planes route to Freeport. (Luckily for him Capt. John wasn't going to the States). Upon arriving to the boat 2 young adults and two men were transferred to the Rescue boat, with 1 man refusing to leave the Fishing Vessel due to the vessel taking on water. Rescue THREE returned to base with the 4 POB (persons on board). The next day the family had made arrangements to go to the last know position to retrieve the man and the boat for safe harbor. Now two days after Basra’s involvement it began again when the police informed BASRA the man had been reported missing (AGAIN) This time the boat and himself were gone. A plane was launched again with Capt Horsefall (forgive the spelling) and Colin Rose to search. Three hours into the search they returned with a possibility of a location in West End Marina. After a police search and nothing turned up the family drove to west end and saw the boat "Mistaken to be Mary D" The next morning, Saturday September 22nd 2007, BASRA Search and Rescue Director, Justin Snisky arranged for Capt. John to again go up and search a larger area this time. Within a few hours into the mission he spotted the boat approx. 14 miles NNE of Memory Rock, Basra’s Rescue ONE was launched with Justin Snisky as captain d’Von Archer and Justin Palacious as crew along for the ride was the brother of the man on the boat to assure BASRA he will leave return to Port. Upon arriving in the vicinity of the area Rescue Officials spotted some small dive boats they wanted to question to see if they may have seen the missing Fishing Vessel. A small boat started to run from Rescue ONE, naturally Rescue ONE went behind it finally realizing it couldn't outrun the Rescue Boat, He came to a stop, as the Rescue ONE pulled up to it a diver onboard grabbed a cooler and dumped about 75 UNDERSIZED CRAWFISH back into the Ocean Hence the picture of them. After a scare of their life thinking they were busted we had to leave them to continue our search for the Missing Fishing Vessel. The Vessel was found another 3 miles north of the last known position with the man onboard willing to get off. BASRA Rescue Crew then secured the Vessel with a proper anchor and returned to base approx 5pm where they were greeted by Channel 12 and Cool 96. How he drifted so far from the mangrove was his anchor broke free in the night and there was nothing else to stop him.
