A Busy Weekend for BASRA Officials
With a total of 7 calls in two days Basra must remind the Boating Community that all BOATERS need to make sure they plan each trip ahead of time with the proper equipment and the proper information such as a float plan. A Float Plan is designed for Boaters to plan a safe trip leaving all information with someone on land to relay to the proper authorities if an emergency situation should arise. The first call (Friday night) was a capsized vessel off of Moores Island, we received this call from marine patrol that a passing sailboat had spotted it and reported itThe 2nd call (also Friday night) received was of a 17ft with a 200 hp. went fishing 3am and never returned Godfrey Waugh and Tom Christian went up in the plane and the boat was found and towed into west end.
The 3rd call later that morning was a sail boat had run aground by Indian cay, (west end)... Gary who is an expert at salvages at Sea received the call and handled it.
The 4th call same time was of another capsized boat being towed into Grand Cay, all was done by the time we got the call. The 5th call came in 6pm by Freeport Harbour Control that a cruise ship had come across a disabled vessel 24 mile S/SW of the harbour and was needed to be re leaved to continue on with their cruise. Rescue 1 was launched with Tom Christian as Captain to retrieve the boat. Moments after this call a 6th call came in by police that a women reported an 8ft tin boat was drifting off of Williams town Beach with two People on Board (POB). Rescue 2 was then launched with d Von Archer as Captain As Rescue 2 arrived at the location new information was given that the vessel was actually off of Coral Beach and was about 10 miles off shore, So Rescue 2 continued as Rescue 1 returned with disabled vessel and crew, Rescue 1 was then given the green light to assist rescue 2 in locating the boat additional night vision and lights was sent to help. Kent Osman had been in BASRA Office relaying all information between Justin Snisky (Search and Rescue Coordinator) and rescue 1and 2. Ed Albury (Another BASRA Rescue Captain) was listing via VHF and as he plotted the 2 coordinates he realized they were similar between both boats and after checking back with the rescued boat it was in fact them in a 8ft boat (wrong description and wrong location) which in turn cost BASRA money for gas they never had. So as both boats were returning in another call came in of a disabled vessel by the Lucayan water way, so rescue 1 was sent to assist in which they towed the disabled vessel in to Port Lucaya around Midnight.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to ALL Involved!!!

BASRA again would like to appeal to the public for Donations. We would take any form of donation from Fuel/Oil to Batteries to Night Vision, to Actual Cheque, First Aid Equipment, diving Equipment. Every little bit helps. We are asking the public’s assistance so when we have calls like these we are properly equipped on all Rescue Boats. Please remember your lives depend on us at Sea and we depend on your support on Land which in turn gives us the tools needed to make that Rescue at Sea Successful.

Lastly I would like to remind all Boaters to File a Simple Plan of:
Where you are going
How Many people on Board
That you have Batteries, VHF Radio, Compass and/or GPS, Flare Gun and Lights
The time you Plan to be back at the dock.
With these simple few; if a situation arises Basra at least has an idea where to start and what we are looking for.
