Students of Bishop Michael Eldon School getting ready for a lesson of SAFETY on the High Seas from BASRA Volunteers

Basra continues the training and boating awareness program by holding two training sessions with 32 Bishop Michael Eldon School students who wanted to learn about water safety before they traveled to Abaco via boat. The group was the split in half with the first half of students learning how to properly put on and secure a life jacket. For the fun part, the students got to go for a training ride with our three Captains Justin Snisky, d’Von Archer and Rod Lowe in the Basra rescue boat. (RESCUE 1)Justin and d’Von performed our standard man overboard (MOB) training program by surprising the students as Justin “fell” over board while the boat traveled, The kids learned how to spot a man over board , how to get the captains attention and turn the boat around for the safe approach and rescue. Also covered in this exercise was an overview of the boats Compass, VHF radio operations and GPS. The students were then shown the radar and advanced electrons search equipment the Basra Rescue One boat carries to assist finding lost boaters at sea. Justin then went into a brief history of BASRA and our roll in society and marine search and rescue. d’Von then taught them about embarking/disembarking a boat as well as approach to any dock. While half of the students were on the boat training session, the other half stayed with Robert Tarzwell, a Basra medic back at dock side taught an overview of emergency medical treatments and procedures, Showing the heart attack portable defibrillator, oxygen tank and regulator, and contents of the trauma box. Enjoying the days outing with many questions about search and rescue. The students all got a chance to go out in the Rescue boat and they all got a chance to learn Medical treatment/procedures. Basra hopes the extra effort to expose our younger generation to the reality and dangers of not being prepared when venturing out to fish, boat or even a refreshing swim at the beach, will pay off as they learn and grow with the understanding how to safely enjoy the sea around them.

For Emergency please call 359-4888 or 727-4888 or hail Ch 16 on the VHF
